The University of Basrah held a workshop on the effects of table sugar on weight gain, organized by the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Titled “The Impact of Table Sugar on Weight Gain,” the workshop focused on raising awareness about the negative effects of excessive sugar consumption in all its forms, its role in obesity, and the key factors contributing to weight gain. It also addressed strategies for prevention and treatment.

The session was delivered by faculty members Batoul Hussein Hatem and Nawras Abdul-Ilah Alwan, who provided an in-depth overview of the major causes of obesity, as well as its links to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

The workshop concluded with several recommendations, including the need to enhance public awareness initiatives, follow a balanced and healthy diet, engage in regular physical activity, and monitor body weight consistently to better manage and prevent weight gain.
