University of Basrah Enhances Practical Training in the Al-Jubayish Marshes
In line with the Sustainable Development Goals and in response to international environmental priorities, the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah, in collaboration with the Al-Jubayish Marshes Organization, conducted a field training program for fifth-year students. The activity was attended by several faculty members and representatives of the college’s Sustainable Development Committee.
The program aimed to strengthen students’ hands-on experience and familiarize them with the unique ecosystem of the marshes, including local livestock and distinctive bird and fish species. These natural features have contributed to the marshes’ recognition as an internationally protected tourism area. The training also provided students with valuable insight into the daily lives of the local communities in this vital region.
As part of the program, students visited the organization’s veterinary clinic, where they observed animal examination and treatment procedures, preventive vaccination practices, and the provision of veterinary services offered free of charge. These efforts support livestock breeders, protect the marsh environment, enhance livestock development—particularly marsh buffalo—and reduce animal mortality.
Professor Raad Al-Asadi, a representative of the organization, expressed his appreciation for the visit of the college delegation and extended special encouragement to the students. He described them as promising veterinary professionals capable of contributing to regional development and revitalizing the marshes, which are regarded as the “lungs of the country” and a fundamental pillar of its environmental system.
