University of Basrah Investigates the Therapeutic Effects of Caffeic Acid on Gouty Arthritis
A master’s thesis at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Basrah, investigated the uric acid-lowering, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects of caffeic acid in rats.
The thesis, presented by researcher Noura Haider Ali, evaluated the therapeutic effects of caffeic acid and compared them with those of allopurinol by examining physiological, hematological, biochemical, and immunological parameters, assessing liver and kidney functions, and conducting histopathological examinations of the joints.
The results showed that caffeic acid reduced uric acid levels, improved inflammatory markers, and reduced oxidative stress. It also improved liver and kidney function and ameliorated histopathological changes. These findings support the potential of caffeic acid as a promising natural compound for the treatment of gouty arthritis.
The thesis recommended further studies to investigate its mechanisms of action and therapeutic efficacy, with the aim of developing complementary natural treatment options.
